SUMMARY:Write Out Loud @ The Frosty Bean with Author Arnolda Dufour Bowes
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 630pm\nMusician 7pm\nAuthor to Follow \n$8 Admissions\nOpening Act is Andrea Haughian \nHeld at THE FROSTY BEAN\, 215 1ST AVE. NE \nA strange and disconcerting aspect of Saskatchewan history is the subject of Write Out Loud on March 6. Arnolda Dufour Bowes is a Cree-Metis Saskatchewan writer whose first book is “20.12m: A Short Story Collection of a Life Lived as a Road Allowance Metis”. “20.12m” refers to the narrow width of many of the road allowances throughout the prairies. This unoccupied crown land became one of the meagre options for many impoverished Métis families as so few owned land. Ms. Bowes celebrates their tenacity to survive and even thrive in the face of so many hardships. She’s received the Danuta Gleed Literary Award\, the High Plains Award for Best Indigenous Author\, and is a playwright and emerging screenwriter. Arnolda has written a novel for young readers and a non-fiction book for schools. She facilitates workshops for children and educators. \nArnolda will be joined by her sister\, artist Andrea Haughian\, who illustrated “20.21m:” Andrea especially enjoys landscape and portrait art and\, though acrylics are usually her choice\, she experiments with a variety of media. She works in an impressionistic style and likes trying to abstract her subjects. She lives in Herbert and has participated in the Southwest Saskatchewan Highway 1 Studio art tour. \nArnolda and Andrea are currently collaborating on a sensory art display\, “Apples & Traintracks” which is being featured at Wanuskewin and Allan Sapp Galleries during 2024. \n Write Out loud appreciates sponsorship for this event from the Living Sky Casino and SIGA.

SUMMARY:Write Out Loud Zarqa Nawaz at The Swift Current Museum
DESCRIPTION:Zarqa Nawaz\, creator of the hit CBC sitcom\, “Little Mosque on the Prairie”\, will be featured at the first Write Out Loud of the 2023-2024 season on Wednesday\, September 20. Please note the change of venue from the Lyric Theatre to the Swift Current Museum. \nNawaz is a freelance writer\, journalist\, broadcaster\, and filmmaker who utilizes comedy to explore relationships between Muslims and their contemporary North American neighbours.  She intended that “Little Mosque on the Prairie”\, broadcast for six seasons and to more than 60 countries\, demystify Islam and explain how practicing Muslims live their lives.  Currently\, her comedy series\, “Zarqa”\, may be found on CBC Gem. \nA Muslim woman of Pakistani origin\, born in England\, and raised in Toronto\, Ms. Nawaz now resides in Regina. Her latest book\, “Jameela Green Ruins Everything”\, shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour\, looks at what has gone wrong with Western foreign policy in the Middle East. It’s a hilarious\, satirical\, and touching story of one woman’s search for meaning and connection. \nThrough her production company\, FUNdamentalist Films (putting the “fun” back in ”fundamentalism”) she creates short films and screenplays. \nNawaz is a passionate advocate for women’s rights within her community and a fierce defender of her faith as one of peace. She’s a frequent public speaker on Islam and comedy\, gender and faith\, and multiculturalism and plurality. \nWrite Out Loud is pleased to acknowledge sponsorship for this evening by Prairie Quills Writers’ Group and the Voth Family\, and for Write Out Loud program sponsorship from Anderson & Company\, and Stark & Marsh. \nWrite Out Loud commences September 20 at the Swift Current Museum. Admission is $8. Doors open at 6:30. Classical guitarist and Principal of Great Plains College\, Brad Mahon\, will entertain at 7:00\, and Ms. Nawaz will follow. \n$8 Admission
