SUMMARY:Write Out Loud Local Writers with Authors Doug Cameron\, Bonnie Allen\, Olivia Brotzell & Chris Beuhler
DESCRIPTION:Authors –Doug Cameron\, Bonnie Allen\, Olivia Brotzell & Chris Beuhler \nDoors @ 6:30pm $8 Admission \nBonnie Allen is an award-winning journalist who has spent 26 years reporting for TV\, radio\, and\ndigital from across Canada and around the world. Her career with CTV and CBC took her to\nseveral Canadian cities and to several countries in Africa. She’s currently the CBC National\nReporter based in Saskatchewan and has won several awards including recognition for shining a\npublic spotlight on intimate partner homicide and the overdose crisis in Saskatchewan. In 2022\,\nshe was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for the best local reporter in the country.\nChris Beuhler has assembled a lifetime of experiences and developed well-defined attitudes and\nconcerns about the state of planet earth and our place upon it. He has found the media of fiction\nand science fiction ideal for sharing those concepts. “We are still here” is now in its second\nedition\, and the next novel in the series\, published by Friesen Press\, is called “Quest for Nuna\nImmaluk”. “Ayra”\, the third novel in this series\, postulates a possible outcome for artificial\nintelligence.\nDoug Cameron\, with a Bachelor’s Degree and PHD in Agriculture\, worked at Research Stations\nin Ottawa and Swift Current. He started his own farm and did soils and environmental consulting\nall over Saskatchewan followed by work in several countries with agencies such as SNC-Lavalin\,\nthe FAO\, and the World Bank. Drawing on his experiences as councilor to the president of the\nSaskatchewan Institute of Agrologists’ regulatory body\, he’s written two satires on regulatory\nbodies which are both shortlisted for the Mark Twain Satire Award. He’s written an entertaining\nand nostalgic memoir\, “The Tarzan Tree”\, about growing up on a farm in Alberta.\nKeith M. Leonard is a fiction writer and also the creator and host of the “Brewing Fiction\nPodcast” produced in Swift Current. Keith's love for suspense and horror is evident in his stories\,\nwhich often have dark undertones. While he enjoys writing about traditional monsters and the\nsupernatural\, he finds the cruelty and horror inherent in humanity far more terrifying. His debut\npublication\, a collection of micro-horror fiction entitled “Short Not Sweet”\, will be released on\nFebruary 21st\, 2025.\nOlivia Brotzell is a budding writer\, intent on asking much of her characters and constructing\ndriving plots. Though yet unpublished\, she hopes to be some day. She is a trained musician and\nlibrarian (Public Services Manager for the Swift Current Library and Chinook Regional Library)\nand is passionate about the arts as well as access to the arts. She’s finished the first draft of a\nhistorical fiction novel and becoming a published writer is her next goal. \nFor more information: Terry Toews: t.toews@sasktel.net or Dianne Miller: dorm@sasktel.net \nEvent Sponsors Stark and Marsh

SUMMARY:Winterruption Pride Out Loud w/The First Jew In Canada by S. Bear Bergman
DESCRIPTION:*ASL Interpretation available by request: Please email swiftcurrentpride@gmail.com\nto express interest by January 16th*\n \nSouthwest Sask Pride and Write Out Loud present Pride Out Loud!\nThe First Jew In Canada: A Trans Tale by celebrated author\, poet\, playwright\, and theatre artist S. Bear Bergman\nTickets $15 @ the Door\, also will be accepting donations of shelf stable food items for the Community Fridge. Doors open at 6:30\, show starts at 7pm.\nThe Lyric Theatre is wheelchair accessible at the entrance\, main floor\, and washrooms. \nThe Incredible True Story Of Jaques LaFargue\, The 18th Century Transgender\nJewish Ancestor You’ve Never Heard Of!\nIn 1738\, a young transgender man named Jacques LaFargue set off from France to\nwhat is now Quebec City\, determined to make for himself a new life. The First Jew In\nCanada: A Trans Tale is his story\, embroidered onto the bones of nine verifiable facts\nabout his life and existence\, interwoven with the modern experience of a trans and\nJewish immigrant to Canada three hundred years later. A thrilling and illuminating\ntale\, The First Jew In Canada takes its audience on a trans\, Jewish journey of\noptimism\, faith\, and joy – including the joy of finding an ancestor you never knew you\nhad.\n“absorbing… amusing…a richly textured story about two remarkable lives.” – Toronto\nStar\, Critic’s Pick\n“skillful…deeply affecting…funny and sad and sweet and difficult and true\, a “Bear”\nhug of a show” – Broadway World\n“The best solo show I have ever seen! People should rush out to see this… brilliant\nwriting\, incredible performance.” – Cup Of Hemlock Theatre Podcast\n“Puts the trans in transcendent…a solo show with a sense of heart and honesty\nthat’ll leave your cheeks wet and your chest warm. -Intermission Magazine\nIn a world quick to claim that trans identities are a modern phenomenon\, Jacques’s\nstory stands as a testament to the long\, rich history of trans people. This show is not\njust a recounting of historical facts; it’s a Midrash – an exploration of the “whys” and\nthe silences in between. It is a celebration of lineage – or yichus – for those who’ve\nbeen told they have none. The First Jew in Canada is more than just a performance; it’s an opportunity to connect with our past\, understand our present\, and imagine a\nmore inclusive future. Whether you’re seeking knowledge\, kinship\, or simply a\ncompelling story\, this event promises to enlighten\, engage\, and inspire. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Write Out Loud @ The Frosty Bean with Author Arnolda Dufour Bowes
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 630pm\nMusician 7pm\nAuthor to Follow \n$8 Admissions\nOpening Act is Andrea Haughian \nHeld at THE FROSTY BEAN\, 215 1ST AVE. NE \nA strange and disconcerting aspect of Saskatchewan history is the subject of Write Out Loud on March 6. Arnolda Dufour Bowes is a Cree-Metis Saskatchewan writer whose first book is “20.12m: A Short Story Collection of a Life Lived as a Road Allowance Metis”. “20.12m” refers to the narrow width of many of the road allowances throughout the prairies. This unoccupied crown land became one of the meagre options for many impoverished Métis families as so few owned land. Ms. Bowes celebrates their tenacity to survive and even thrive in the face of so many hardships. She’s received the Danuta Gleed Literary Award\, the High Plains Award for Best Indigenous Author\, and is a playwright and emerging screenwriter. Arnolda has written a novel for young readers and a non-fiction book for schools. She facilitates workshops for children and educators. \nArnolda will be joined by her sister\, artist Andrea Haughian\, who illustrated “20.21m:” Andrea especially enjoys landscape and portrait art and\, though acrylics are usually her choice\, she experiments with a variety of media. She works in an impressionistic style and likes trying to abstract her subjects. She lives in Herbert and has participated in the Southwest Saskatchewan Highway 1 Studio art tour. \nArnolda and Andrea are currently collaborating on a sensory art display\, “Apples & Traintracks” which is being featured at Wanuskewin and Allan Sapp Galleries during 2024. \n Write Out loud appreciates sponsorship for this event from the Living Sky Casino and SIGA.
